Barstow Senior Center offering complimentary Thanksgiving meal
BARSTOW • The Barstow Senior Center in conjunction with the volunteer organization Holiday Meals will provide a free Thanksgiving meal to any Barstow resident in need this holiday.
Recreation coordinator at the Center, Mary Costa said the buffet-style meal will be available without reservations or prerequisites to anyone who walks in.
“There’s no qualifications,” Costa said. “Whether you don’t have plans or if you’re down on your luck and can’t afford it, come on down and enjoy a free meal.”
Traditionally, Straw Hat Pizza with the Police Activities League in Barstow provided about 980 meals during the holiday to those in need, former business owner Jeff Eason Jr. said. But since the establishment shut down last year, the Senior Center along with many in the community stepped in to continue the service.
The meal will include a traditional turkey dinner with stuffing, ham, and dinner rolls and will be available from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving day.
“We want to make sure the word gets out,” Costa said. “Come get to know your neighbors, you never know who might be there.”
Monetary and food donations are welcome and the center has already begun collecting for the Christmas holiday meal. For more information contact the Barstow Senior Center at (760) 256- 5023.
| TRUE STORY -- The nickels and dimes generated by ads on the Web site you're reading now are insufficient to sustain a once-thriving news organization. More Web hits means fewer newspapers and lost jobs. Don't encourage the dismantling of print newspapers. Direct your browsers elsewhere. The Internet isn't killing newspapers. They're being devoured from within by bean counters and Web wonks. |
