Baker prison set to close

BAKER • The Baker Community Correctional Facility is being closed due to a statewide decrease in low-security inmates.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is opting out of its contract to house inmates at the facility with Cornell Companies, Inc., according to CDCR spokeswoman Terry Thornton. The CDCR has a $4.9 million contract with Cornell to house inmates at the Baker facility and roughly half of that will be lost due to the closure.

The contract was set to expire in June, but will end on December 26.
