Adelanto begins charging groups for using city parks
New fees to build revenue for expansions
ADELANTO • Groups of 25 or more and sports teams will now have to seek permits and pay fees to use the facilities at city-owned parks.
City Council has passed a new parks policy and fee schedule that aims to help the city recoup expenses to care for parks. The city loses about $89,000 annually on maintenance, lighting and grounds upkeep at the city’s three major parks — Richardson, Mrgrdichian and Marconi, according to City Manager Jim Hart.
By previously funding parks operations through the general fund, the city has “overburdened the city’s budget and restricted the parks departments’ ability to insure proper funding,” states a city staff report analyzing the parks department.
Officials also hope the new fees will develop a more sustainable funding mechanism for the future growth of city parks.
The city has developed a parks master plan in hopes of securing state grants or other revenue sources over the next few years. The expanded plans total an additional $144,000 in future annual maintenance and include:
• Three more soccer/baseball fields;
• One more baseball field;
• One multi-use field and;
• One football field.
