College students, City Council rally for community-run farmer's market
ADELANTO • As the City Council seeks to bolster resources for underdeveloped north Adelanto, several college students are working to increase access to fresh produce by growing a community-run farmer’s market.
Five students in the social work program at California State University, San Bernardino, have targeted north Adelanto, from Rancho Road up to Chamberlain Way, for what started out as a school project but has grown into a commitment to provide a need cited by many residents: affordable fresh fruits and vegetables.
“We need to follow through until the community is able to do it on their own,” said student Heather Munger, 31.
Some say they can’t get to Adelanto’s only grocery store, Stater Bros., off Highway 395 and Palmdale Road.
In an informal survey at local churches, stores, parks and streets, more than 93 percent of some 250 residents said they were interested in a farmer’s market, the students reported to City Council. More than 85 percent said they weren’t satisfied with the quantity, quality and access to fresh produce.
