Citizens detain man who offered boy money for sex

Staff Writer

HESPERIA • Several concerned citizens helped detain a man suspected of offering a teen money for sex Thursday, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Hesperia station officials said. The man is also believed to have committed a similar crime in October.

Jose Cuevas, 54, of Hesperia was arrested for lewd and lascivious acts with a child under the age of 14.

Investigators believe there may be other victims and are asking anyone who may have been approached by Cuevas to come forward.

Sheriff’s investigators were contacted by a juvenile Thursday afternoon and reported a man had offered him money for sex after the boy helped the man — later identified as Cuevas — push his 1992 green Honda to a gas station on Seventh Avenue and Main Street, according to Sue Rose, spokeswoman for the Hesperia station.

As Sheriff’s Service Specialist Pam Balsitis approached the gas station, she noticed several citizens were keeping Cuevas from leaving the location, officials said.

When Deputy Joe Necochea arrived, he recognized Cuevas as a suspect wanted for a similar crime that took place in October, according to a release. In that previous incident, it’s believed Cuevas gave a juvenile a ride to a gas station and allegedly molested the boy in the vehicle. That vehicle was a white Honda sedan.

Cuevas was booked into West Valley Detention Center.

Anyone with information on this case or who may be a victim is asked to contact Detective Tina Kirby at the Hesperia station at (760) 947-1500 or call WeTip at (800) 78-CRIME.

Beatriz E. Valenzuela may be reached at (760) 951-6276 or at
