Man slams into back of semi

HESPERIA • A Riverside man was in critical condition Tuesday morning after his work truck smashed into the back of a tractor trailer that was stopped at a red light on Highway 395 and Main Street, officials said.

A tractor trailer was stopped at a red light on Highway 395 a little after 5 a.m. when Pete Gerardo slammed into the back of the semi, Deputy Paul Bader of the Hesperia station’s Major accident Investigation Team said.

Gerardo received major injuries to his legs and some injuries to his head. San Bernardino County Fire Department rescuers had to cut Gerardo from the wreckage, Bader said.

His injuries do not appear life-threatening, according to officials.

Gerardo was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton.

Highway 395 was shut down for at least three hours as officials investigated the crash.

Officials are looking into the incident but Bader said initial findings point to unsafe speed.
